// The challenge

No two parts from the same factory

A Mercedes M111 2.3 turbo on standalone MaxxECU management, driving a ZF 8HP45 that expects a BMW powertrain network — plus a sequential-style shifter and a CAN keypad that came from neither. The mechatronic needs correct torque, driver demand and gear requests at the right rate or it does the one thing it's designed to do when it doesn't like what it sees: nothing.

// The solution

Factory transmission software, translated

IOcan sits between the MaxxECU and the mechatronic and makes each side look like something the other understands. The gearbox keeps its original BMW software — nothing reflashed, nothing sent away — and sees a complete, correctly timed powertrain network. Torque is calculated independently rather than trusted from a single broadcast value, and reduction is negotiated with the ECU on every shift.

The transmission runs a custom tune rather than an OEM map, and the reason is in the numbers: 684 Nm through a gearbox whose model designation refers to a 450 Nm input rating (measured on a STW C-enter Power Factor dyno — 553.3 KM @ 6,181 rpm, 683.8 Nm @ 5,085 rpm). That gap is closed by calibration — line pressure scheduled against actual torque, clutch fill and shift timing reworked around a boosted four's delivery, and torque reduction negotiated with the MaxxECU on every shift.

15,000 km, including two trips across Europe

Between 14,000 and 15,000 kilometres since the build was finished, two of them European road trips of roughly 4,000 km each — Poland to Croatia, Poland to Italy. Motorway cruising, alpine passes, city traffic, summer heat, no support truck. Calibration work continues and shift quality is still being refined, but that's a different question from whether the drivetrain holds together, and the odometer has already answered it.
